Defra Approved Stoves - Wood Burning - Multi Fuel

What is DEFRA?
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is a government department in the UK.

The Government believes that we need to protect the environment for future generations, make our economy more environmentally sustainable, and improve our quality of life and well-being. They also believe that much more needs to be done to support the farming industry, protect biodiversity and encourage sustainable food production.

What's the difference between Defra Approved Stoves and Defra Exempt Stoves? Both terms effectively mean that the stove can be used in smoke control areas. These appliances have passed tests to confirm they are capable of burning an unauthorised or inherently smoky solid fuel without emitting smoke. So what this means is that you can only burn unauthorised fuels in a smoke control area if you use an exempt appliance (one that has been approved by DEFRA).

DEFRA is the government body responsible for testing and approving solid fuel heating appliances for use in smoke control zones. If you have any questions please contact Defra direct on 08459 33 55 77. To be certain if you are or are not located in a smoke control area it is recommended that you contact the Environmental Health or Protection department of your Local Authority.

For more information see the Defra website (opens in a new window).
